The Foundation released their annual report and reported an update on their long-term Endowment Campaign.

Twelve of fifty-two strategic fund areas are now fully funded: In 2002 the Foundation embarked on their first

endowment campaign in an effort to ensure the long-term financial support for Delaware 4-H Programs funded

by the Foundation. This campaign was set up so that the principal is invested and only the earnings are used to

fund the following targeted areas on an annual basis: Awards, Trips, & Scholarships; Camping Programs;

Leadership and Program Development; Project Specific Support.

In 2008, The Foundation was able to fulfill three endowments through the generosity of one long time 4-H

Family from Lewes, Delaware. Board President Denis Shaffer announced the
William N. and Dorothy C.
Hopkins Endowment. Through their generous contribution, funds will help support sending Delaware 4-H’ers

enrolled in Agricultural and Environmental Science projects on a trip to either National 4-H Congress or

another appropriate national event in the Agriculture and/or Environmental Science project areas. Additional

money will also fund two camp counselor scholarship endowments.

Bill and Dorothy Hopkins were the cornerstone of a Delaware 4-H Family that is now well into its third

generation. The Hopkins Family has been supporting and contributing to the 4-H program for decades. When

Mrs. Hopkins passed away in 2005, many gifts were donated to the Foundation in her memory. In 2008, the

entire Hopkins Family made together the decision of a contribution that would utilize the memorial money and hopkins 09.jpg

add to it in order to fulfill a few of the Foundation’s endowment needs. “With our most sincere gratitude, we

would like to thank the entire Hopkins Family,” said Shaffer.

Marian Hopkins Harvey, with daughters Emily

and Hannah, accepted the recognition and spoke on behalf of the Hopkins Family.

The Charlotte and Coulter Passwaters Spirit Endowment is open ended and provides a place for contributions to

be made in honor of living friends and family of 4-H. These memorial funds can be made in addition to

donations made over the years in memory of those who have gone before us. The Delaware 4-H Foundation is

compiling a list of the names who have had contributions made in their honor or memory. Those names will be

added to this Endowment and announced this time next year.

Individuals, families, business and community organizations interested in establishing an endowment are

encouraged to learn more. Endowments can be set up with by making incremental payments over a 5 year

period, for a minimum of $5000 over five years. “This is an investment that will continue to support 4-H’ers

and their achievements through the generations – there is no greater gift,” said Shaffer.

While the main purpose of the annual event was to celebrate and thank donors during 2008, The Foundation

recognized that earlier in 2009 the Delaware 4-H Program loss two legacies of leadership, Marion MacDonald

and Joy Sparks. “We will never be able to fill the shoes of these two special women… or fully express our

gratitude for all of the contributions they’ve made, ” Shaffer said. Two long-term endowments in their memory

are in development during 2009 and will be announced next year at this event. Donations can be made through

the Delaware 4-H Foundation at www.delaware4hfoundation.org or (302) 831-2509.
